You coach or train for endurance and triathlon and want maps, the full readiness and load suite, and data you can use to manage clients' weekly volume.

You mainly run and don't need maps or the newest load tools: a discounted 965 or a Forerunner 170 covers most of it for far less.
Announced on 15 May 2025, the Forerunner 970 keeps the 965’s 47 mm format and adds what that watch lacked: a sapphire lens and titanium bezel, a brighter AMOLED, a built-in LED flashlight, a speaker and microphone, ECG and Garmin’s Gen 5 optical sensor. DC Rainmaker found land GPS and optical heart rate close to his reference devices, OutdoorGearLab scored it 83/100, and billiger.de lists an average of 4.5/5 across nine expert reviews.
New training tools include Running Tolerance (a weekly mileage ceiling based on load), Impact Load and a triathlon Garmin Coach; Running Economy and Step Speed Loss need the separate HRM 600 strap. The trade-offs are cost and battery: the RRP is 749.99 EUR (about 624 EUR street in Germany), and smartwatch mode drops to 15 days, although common GPS modes run slightly longer than on the 965.
