Nobody Is Funding ‘Generic’ Anymore

Look at where the money went this week. A mushroom-based wellness brand (SuperMush) pulled in $3 million, per Indian Startup News. An intimate wellness brand (GLORIAH) raised £600K, per Femtech Insider. A gym franchise announced $100 million in expansion plans, per 1News. And a no-referral AI breast ultrasound clinic launched at $349 a scan, per Hoodline.

These are not random data points. They are a map. Capital is flowing hard to two opposite ends of the fitness and wellness spectrum — mass scale and radical niche — and quietly starving everything in between.

If your studio or coaching business is ‘good for everyone,’ that is not a positioning strategy. That is a waiting room.

The Fracture Lines Are Getting Clearer

On one end: the $100 million franchise play, reported by 1News, is a bet that consolidation wins. Bigger footprint, more locations, brand recognition as the moat. That game requires capital, systems, and the appetite to compete on convenience.

On the other end, you have SuperMush going deep on a specific functional wellness identity, GLORIAH owning intimate health as a category, and Eve Wellness laser-focused on one screening modality for one demographic. None of these are trying to be everything. They are trying to be the thing for someone specific.

Then there is the Montana Outdoor story about a gym membership that comes with a golden retriever — yes, really. It sounds like a headline gag, but it is actually the sharpest illustration of the moment: even community and joy are now differentiators. The experience around fitness is becoming the product.

The middle — decent equipment, decent classes, decent price — is getting hollowed out from both sides.

Your Move: Pick an Edge and Name It Out Loud

You do not need $3 million or a franchise war chest to act on this. You need clarity. Here is a concrete exercise you can run this week:

Step 1 — Write down who your last 10 clients actually were. Not who you hoped to attract. Who showed up, paid, and came back. Age, goal, lifestyle, what else they spend money on. Look for the pattern you have been ignoring.

Step 2 — Find the category word. SuperMush has ‘functional wellness.’ GLORIAH has ‘intimate wellness.’ Eve Wellness has ‘preventive screening.’ What is your one-phrase category? It should make some people say ‘that is not for me’ — that is how you know it is working.

Step 3 — Audit your messaging for the word ‘everyone.’ Every time your website or social bio says ‘for everyone’ or ‘all fitness levels,’ replace it with the specific person from Step 1. Specificity is not exclusion. It is a magnet.

Step 4 — Add one tangible signal. The golden retriever is a signal. It says something true about the experience before anyone walks in the door. What is your version? A playlist genre, a recovery ritual, a community ritual that only your people would recognize?

The funding landscape is telling you where attention and money are moving. You do not have to raise a round to respond. You just have to stop being forgettable.
